HUMENNE, Slovakia (July 16) – Tatsuya FUJII notched a pair of wins at 85kg for fifth place and Ryuki YOSHIDA recorded a fall at 76kg for ninth place as the greco-roman competition concluded at the Cadet Wrestling World Championships.

Fujii recorded falls with a deceptively quick headlock in the second round against Asia cadet bronze medalist Shripal SHRIPAL (IND) and in the consolation bracket against Valentas RUDYS (LTU), who was 12th in this year’s European championships.

In the quarterfinals, Fujii got caught in a headlock by eventual gold medalist Vladen KOZLIUK (UKR) and then in the bronze medal bout, could not stop the gut wrench of Polish newcomer Marcel KASPEREK (POL) for a technical fall.

Meanwhile, Yoshida was tagged with a passivity call in the first period of his opening bout, but quickly turned a gut wrench by Athanasios HARALAMPIDIS (GRE) into a chance for the win, pouncing on the Mediterranean championships runner-up for the fall.

Yoshida, however, fell in the second round to Burgo BEISHALIEV (KGZ) and was eliminated from the competition when Beishaliev lost in the next round to eventual champion, Krysztof NIKLAZ (POL).

In the final team standings, Russia edged Azerbaijan on criteria for the team title when both teams finished with 49 points each. Russia, however, was given first place with three champions while Azerbaijan had only three silver medalists without a champion.

Iran was third with 43 points from a gold, a silver and three bronze medals. Japan, meanwhile, finished 23rd with eight points.
