ULAN BAATAR (July 26) – Ai TAGUCHI and Kako OKAMOTO kicked off the girls’ freestyle events with a pair of gold medals on the second day of the Asian cadet wrestling championships.
TAGUCHI notched a pair of wins by technical superiority on her way to the title at 38kg while OKAMOTO recorded a fall and a technical fall for the 49kg crown.
Meanwhile, Kasumi KIMBARA earned a silver medal at 43kg and Tochigi middle school student Kana HIGASHIKAWA snared a bronze medal with a pair of technical falls at 40kg.
Japan’s final three entries in greco-roman, however, failed to notch a win in their matches, leaving the Japanese cadets with a dismal record of one win and 13 losses over two days of competition.
Still, in the team standings, the Japanese greco-roman wrestlers scraped together 41 points for seventh place out of the 13 countries entered.
The team title went to Kyrgyzstan with 86 points from three champions and seven bronze medalists, followed by Kazakhstan (82) and Iran (78)
