MORISHITA, AKAGUMA REPEAT IN COLLEGIATE OPEN FREESTYLE

TOKYO (August 22-23) – Universiade bronze medalist Fumitaka MORISHITA and student games team member Naoya AKAGUMA repeated as champions at the All-Japan collegiate open wrestling championships.

 

MORISHITA of Nippon Sports Sciences University defeated 2010 Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Yuki TAKAHASHI of Yamanashi Gakuin for the 55kg crown while AKAGUMA (Takushoku) held on against another YGU regular Akihiro KAMEYAMA in the 84kg final.

 

MORISHITA’s back-to-back titles matched his father, Toshikiyo, who won open titles in 1985 and 1986 at 57kg in freestyle. MORISHITA was named the outstanding wrestler in the men’s events, while AKAGUMA was picked as outstanding freestyle wrestler.

 

Despite being repeat winners, MORISHITA and AKAGUMA were the only champions in freestyle from their respective schools. YGU and Waseda, meanwhile, each claimed a pair of titles.

 

Reigning collegiate national champion Masakazu KAMOI won an collegiate open title at 60kg for YGU along with Oleg BOLTIN at 120kg.  BOLTIN is a freshman exchange student from Kazakhstan at YGU and became the 20th first-year wrestler to win at the collegiate open.

 

For Waseda, Ken HOSAKA won 66kg with a technical fall over defending champion Kosuke SUNAGAWA (NSSU) and Kohei KITAMURA stopped Ryoichi YAMANAKA (NSSU) at 74kg.

55kg – Fumitaka MORISHITA (NSSU) df. Yuki TAKAHASHI (Yamanashi Gakuin), 5-2

60kg – Masakazu KAMOI (YGU) df. Kazuma ITO (Senshu), 4-1

66kg – Ken HOSAKA (Waseda) df. Kosuke SUNAGAWA (NSSU) by TF, 7-2=2:12

74kg – Kohei KITAMURA (Wa) df. Ryoichi YAMANAKA (NSSU), 6-3

84kg – Naoya AKAGUMA (Takushoku) df. Akihiro KAMEYAMA (YGU), 12-10

96kg – Koki YAMAMOTO (Nihon) df. Masaaki SHIKIYA (Kokushikan) by TF, 11-4=4:53

120kg – Oleg BOLTIN (YGU) df. Tomoyuki OKA (Nihon) by TF, 8-1=3:50
